Tibetan Sangha's Eco-forum

Dharamsala, 5 June 2010: Today on its founding anniversary, Tesi Environmental Awareness Movement organized a daylong Eco-forum for the Tibetan monastic communities in and around Dharamsala. From 9 am to 5 pm, two monks each from fifteen monasteries and nunneries gathered at the Conference Hall of Library of Tibetan Works and Archives to discuss the theme: The Role of Tibetan Monastic Communities in Environmental Protection. This forum particularly recognizes that the monastic community has always played a very important role in shaping the Tibetan society towards better living and that the time has now come to lead the Tibetans towards a more eco-friendly and sustainable way of living.

In the morning, Ven. Beri Jigme Wangyal, Ms. Dhondup Dolma Bhartso, Ven. Tsering Choephel, and Ms. Tenzin Pelmo spoke on various topics including Buddhism and Ecology, Traditional Tibetan Eco-friendly Culture, Tibet's Current Environmental Conditions, and Health and Junk Food. The rest of the day was spent amongst the representatives discussing their role in promoting environmental awareness in the Tibetan community and the world at large.

Today, TEAM also declared Rangjung Khoryug Sungkyob Tsokpa as the winner of 2010 Tesi Environmental Service Award, an award given to a Tibetan individual or organization that has contributed to the promotion of environmental awareness in the Tibetan communities. Rangjung Khoryug Sungkyob Tsokpa is an association of Kagyu Buddhist monasteries to help protect the Himalayan region from environmental degradation under the leadership of His Holiness the 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje.

To mark the occasion, TEAM announced the winners of this year’s essay contest as Ven. Penpa Dorjee and Ven. Ani Youdon. TEAM also released its three latest publications in Tibetan—An Introduction to Organic Farming, Environmental and Health Problems related to PVC Products and Thinking Like a Mountain.

One of the participants, Ven. Lobsang, said, “This is my first time attending such an eco-forum. I am now all committed and energized to truly do something for Earth. There are many things we can do. I like writing and from now onwards I plan to write on environmental issues to promote environmental awareness in our communities. And I want to thank the organizer for this wonderful opportunity and for their good work” .

"In our community, monks and nuns play very important roles--from the freedom struggle to spiritual guidance to education. They are leaders and role models in every field. In our last five years of work, we have realized that transforming peoples' minds is next to impossible for just the four people in our group. We need help from the monastic community. So today is a start in involving our leaders to support the mission to revive the ecological consciousness of the Tibetan people", said, Tsering Yangkey, TEAM’s Director.

Tesi Environmental Awareness Movement is a registered non-profit environmental organization based in Dharamsala with a mission to revive the ecological consciousness of the Tibetan people.
