Welcome to Tesi Environmental Awareness Movement
Environment is a broad term which includes living organisms like plants, animals and human beings and non-living ones like water, air and land. It also can be defined as the components of the world above, below and around us. When those constituents are in proper ratio, it is said to be balanced environment. Among all the above components of the environment, human beings are the only ones who modify the natural environment to fulfil their requirements and needs. Thus, the human species becomes the supreme king who destroys the environment.
Even though humans think they are doing nothing wrong other than facilitating their living, the results of their actions show us a different picture. For example, the cost of producing furniture and fuel is paid in terms of deforestation and soil erosion. Deforestation harms and kills plants and this leads to a decrease in the rate of absorption of carbon dioxide (Co2), which in turn causes the greenhouse effect.
Human beings use all sorts of fertilisers and insecticides in cultivation of crops and this weakens the fertility and quality of soil. Another unnoticed cause of ruining land is the use of non-biodegradable products like plastic and of harmful chemicals. These harm the land and reduce its power to produce crops or other plants. Without plants to absorp Co2 from the environment, the earth experiences a rise in temperature, which is known as the Greenhouse Effect.
Though almost 75% of the earth is covered with water, human activities have caused a scarcity of water. People also throw untreated sewage, industrial effluents and other wastes into our rivers, groundwater or streams without giving it a second thought. The degradation and pollution of water results in waterborne diseases like cholera, typhoid, jaundice and malaria. One of the greatest as well as clearest results of water degradation or pollution can be proved by the new, widespread disease, bird-flu, which is snatching the lives of countless beings.
Should the losses mentioned above be called "achievements" of humans or "failures" of humans?
Occasionally, I think these destroyers of the environment act as if they have a different air of environment. They don't know they are ruining their own home. People use automobiles, refrigerators, and burn everything that they don¡¦t need carelessly and irresponsibly. The disturbance of the fixed ratio of air causes air pollution. The excessive use of automobiles and pollution-producing articles in industries give rise to harmful gases. More importantly, the CFCs (chloroflurocarbons) present in a refrigerator cause a thinning of the ozone layer (o3). The thinning of the ozone layer leads to the entry of UV rays that result in
